Sustainable Processes Connect is a peer-reviewed, Gold Open Access journal dedicated to the design, modeling, optimization, and scale-up of processes that make the production and use of chemicals, materials, energy, and water more sustainable. The journal publishes original research, and a limited number of reviews and perspectives, that advance sustainable processes from laboratory innovation toward real-world and commercial application.
The defining requirement for all submissions is a clear process-engineering component — a defined process that is designed, modeled, optimized, assessed, or scaled up. Purely descriptive, survey-based, or policy-only studies without a process basis fall outside the journal's scope and will be redirected or declined.
The journal welcomes contributions across seven sections:
- Green Chemistry, Catalysis & Sustainable Synthesis — green solvents, homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis, photo/electro/thermocatalysis, CO₂ conversion, and green synthesis of nanomaterials.
- Bioprocess Engineering & Biorefineries — fermentation, enzyme technology, microbial processes, bioreactor design, biofuels and bioproducts, and waste biorefineries.
- Water, Wastewater & Environmental Remediation — biological and physico-chemical treatment, resource recovery from wastewater, bioremediation, desalination and biodesalination, and soil and site remediation.
- Sustainable Energy Conversion & Storage — renewable energy systems, hydrogen production, bioenergy, electrochemical storage, and energy-process integration.
- Waste Valorization, Circular Economy & Sustainable Materials — solid waste management, recycling and upcycling, valorization of agro-industrial residues, and green, bio-based, and composite materials.
- Process Systems, Scale-Up & Sustainability Assessment — process intensification, lab-to-market scale-up, life cycle assessment, techno-economic analysis, and AI and digital tools for process optimization, including policy work directly tied to process technology.
- Emerging & Cross-Cutting Sustainable Process Technologies — sustainable process applications not covered above but with a clear process-engineering basis, including carbon capture and utilization at process scale, sustainable manufacturing and industrial electrification, food and agro-process engineering, emission and air-quality control processes, and interdisciplinary innovations spanning two or more sections.
The journal serves an international community of researchers, engineers, and practitioners working to translate sustainable process innovation into practical impact.
